Klaxons - Fluorescent Footprints

Interview with James Righton of Klaxons

By: Rachel Littlejohn

Ever wanted to challenge Klaxons for their role in filling H&M with funny fluorescent nylon clothing? Or maybe a burning desire to know their deepest and innermost thoughts regarding that most controversial of subjects; pâté.

Well we shall keep you waiting no longer, dear readers. Subculture Magazine caught up with keyboardist and co-vocalist James Righton to chew the fat and get a few answers to some very difficult questions. Here follows the low-down on easily the most pressing matters of the day; and, perhaps most crucially, whether or not they’ve enough dosh yet to buy us all a pint...

  • Myths Of The Near Future (DGC)

  • How do you guys feel about being the pin-ups of this thing called new-rave and can you explain to those out the terminological loop what it's all about?

We feel numb. Its something we know very little thing about. We're an apocalyptic pop band; the new rave thing just confuses a lot of people.

  • Do you feel in any way guilty for your part in the revival of day-glo clothing?

We plead not guilty. We pretty much wear black and white these days. We've become blind from all the neon.

  • Noel Gallagher doesn't like you. Any words for the mono-browed one?

No. he apologised after he actually took a listen. He said he was wrong which we found entertaining. We met him a few weeks ago and we made up.

  • Is it true that you initially refused a support slot with Muse?

Yeah, it's not happening. Muse are great but there was another offer which we have agreed to do.

  • Who do you rate as a great British live act at the moment?

I don't think there are many. The horrors are good but we don't spend enough time here anymore. But we never have been particularly inspired by the current crop of British groups.

  • Your website could induce epileptic fits. Discuss.

Yea we're not that fond of it either. It's going soon we've found another one.

  • I've heard your rider includes red wine and a cheese platter. In a similar vein, what are your feelings on pate?

Hate it. It just looks wrong. I think the other two love it though especially Simon.

  • If Myths of the Near Future is the first part of a trilogy, have you decided upon the era you'll focus on for the past?
I've just seen 300 so maybe ancient Persia sounds nice.

  • The video for "Magick"'s a bit sinister. Fun to make?

Yes and no. Simon froze to death which wasn't fun for him. But we enjoyed watching.

  • Simon, is it true that your hair has spawned a web community? If so, would you like to challenge Amy Winehouse's hair related "8th Wonder of the World" status?

It has, and it’s James. Simon has much better hair; he's the envy of a lot of people, good genes you see.

  • You guys are touring at the moment; is it all groupies with glo-sticks or early nights with sci-fi books?

It's more red wine and good food. We're now an experimental culinary band.

  • Do any of you have essential touring items, like a teddy or a jar of marmite?

A good supply of underwear and overwear, plus a nice dressing gown to relax in.

  • You're playing the Reading and Leeds festivals in August; who will you be keen to see of the confirmed line-up thus far?

LCD Soundsystem always put on a good show, but apart from that we usually stick to the smaller tents.

  • Your video for "Gravity's Rainbow" features giant Rubik's cubes in the background at one point; have any of you ever completed one, or did you just peel the stickers off and cheat?

No. I hate them with a passion. I'm not good at games unfortunately.

  • Refreshingly, you guys made no secret of wanting to sell a million records. How's it coming along and can you afford to shout Subculture magazine readers a pint yet?

Yes but it depends on your readership. Maybe the first thousand subscribers can have one the rest get a half.
