  • Squarepusher Launches Shobaleader One

    Squarepusher Launches Shobaleader One

Seminal electronic producer Squarepusher is set to release an album with new project Shobaleader One.

Real name Tom Jenkinson, Squarepusher has led one of the most singular careers in electronic music. Using a variety of pseudonyms, the producer has matched IDM with frenetic drum 'n' bass.

Now Squarepusher has confirmed a new project. A press release this afternoon (September 2nd) confirmed the existence of Shobaleader One, a new group featuring the hugely influential producer.

A new release titled 'd'Emonstration' is set to appear on October 18th. Released through Warp Records, the forthcoming mini-album will apparently contain nine tracks although little solid information is available.

Typically reclusive, Squarepusher has refused to divulge much about the project which is available for pre-order to Bleep now.

Watch a Shobaleader preview video HERE.

The project represents a return to Warp for the producer. Earlier this year Squarepusher crafted a new track which he decided would be better served by releasing it through French label Ed Banger.

The one off track is set to be released shortly, with previews available via Ed Banger's Soundcloud page.

  • Field Music Confirm London Show

    Field Music Confirm London Show

Sunderland indie rock group Field Music are set to play their biggest ever headline show in London later this year.

Tragically, some albums just don't get the success they deserve. Such is the case with 'Field Music (Measure)' which despite overwhelming critical praise failed to breach the iron walls of the mainstream.

Oh well, at least we can enjoy Field Music without their tracks appearing on soap adverts. Furthermore, did we really expect an album with the sheer sonic ambition of 'Field Music (Measure)' to ever crack the charts?

Mixing fierce indie punk with prog influences, the new album ran to some twenty tracks and ranks amongst the more purely creative releases to stem from British shores in some time.

For latecomers, Field Music have kindly decided to release their title track (of sorts) as a single. 'Measure' is due to be released on November 23rd, allowing fans to catch up with the Sunderland mavericks.

Set to be available as a digital download, a new vinyl version of 'Measure' has been confirmed for fans who can't tear themselves away from the Gramophone.

The band sadly missed out on a nomination for the Mercury Music Prize, but Field Music have been able to build on past success. Touring across the country, the Sunderland band restricted themselves to only a few festivals.

Now Field Music have confirmed their biggest ever headline show. Due to take place in London's Koko venue on November 23rd the date is the culmination of more than five years work for the band.

Always slow to complete new projects, it took Field Music three years to release their second album. With their new touring cycle coming to a close, the band could well shut up shop once more.

A rare chance to catch the Sunderland group in a venue of this size, tickets for the one off show are set to go on sale shortly.

Field Music are set to play the following show:

    November
    23 London Koko

  • Yoko Ono To Sing With Lady Gaga

Yoko Ono To Sing With Lady Gaga

Yoko Ono is set to sing with Lady Gaga and more at an upcoming John Lennon tribute concert.

Yoko Ono was already a hugely respected artist before she met John Lennon, yet the lives of the two are often difficult to separate. Now leading a new version of the Plastic Ono Band, the Japanese artist has arranged two new concerts.

Following on from a collaborative display in Brooklyn earlier this year, the group are set to play two concerts in Los Angeles in memory of John Lennon.

The band will play at the city's Orpheum Theatre between October 1st and 2nd, with Yoko Ono announcing a series of guest stars. A renowned avant garde performer, the Japanese artist will work with Sonic Youth.

A dream pairing for fans of left field rock, Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore will represent the New York group. Other confirmed guests include punk pioneer Iggy Pop, Nels Cline and Minutemen bass player Mike Watt.

In an eclectic, often bizarre, list Yoko Ono has confirmed appearances from actress Carrie Fisher, Harper Simon, RZA and more. Bizarrely, pop iconoclast Lady Gaga is due to appear at the concert.

A feminist icon, Yoko Ono clearly admires the spirit of the American singer. Lady Gaga will sing at one of the concerts, appearing live with the Plastic Ono Band. The current incarnation of the group features Sean Lennon, Yuka Honda and Japanese indie rocker Cornelius.

Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band will focus on material recorded with John Lennon, although newer albums will be represented. The new shows follow on from an event earlier this year, in which the band were joined by the likes of Eric Clapton (who collaborated with John Lennon), Paul Simon, and Scissor Sisters.

The shows in February climaxed with an all star jam rendition of 'Give Peace A Chance' featuring many of the guest performers.

Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band are due to play:

    October
    1 Los Angeles Orpheum Theatre
    2 Los Angeles Orpheum Theatre

  • My Morning Jacket Side Project Due

My Morning Jacket Side Project Due

My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel is putting the finishing touches to his solo album 'All Birds Say'.

My Morning Jacket are much more than just a vehicle for Jim James. Sure, the singer's glistening voice is a thing of beauty but the band's wide ranging, versatile songwriting is a group effort.

Set to re-visit their back catalogue over five nights in New York this November, My Morning Jacket are currently on downtime. Rather than rest on the couch, guitarist Carl Broemel has written a new solo album.

'All Birds Say' is steeped in Southern melancholy, with songs that equally recall bluegrass and Nick Drake. Soft, acoustic based material is demonstrates just how strong Broemel's songwriter can be.

Other members of My Morning Jacket appear, with Jim James set to add his unmistakable vocals. Speaking to Spin, Carl Broemel reflected on the band's involvement with his solo material.

"They gave me really honest feedback about the music as it was coming together," he said. "Their blessing, their collective thumbs-up helped me get the confidence to put myself out there."

Carl Broemel is a natural perfectionist, but with time drawing in he needed help to complete the tracklisting. Trying different combinations, Jim James finally helped his band mate to finish the album.

"I was kind of desperate at the end because I had to turn in the album, and to me, the sequence was super crucial," he said. "Jim came back with a really interesting sequence that basically ended up being what I used."

Set to be released later this year, Carl Broemel's 'All Birds Say' will be supported by a handful a Stateside dates. Sadly, there are currently no plans to bring the album to the other side of the Atlantic.

Carl Broemel's 'All Birds Say' is set to be released later this year.

    Dum Dum Girls London Show

American noise-pop group Dum Dum Girls are set to play a one off show in London later this year.

Signed to Sub Pop, Dum Dum Girls released their debut album 'I Will Be' earlier this year to widespread acclaim. A word of mouth success story, the record mixed bubble gum pop with shards of noise.

An update on the template offered by The Jesus And Mary Chain, 'I Will Be' is a teasing, tantalising glimpse of what Dum Dum Girls are capable of. Dee Dee, Jules, Bambie and new drummer, Sandy Vu have won fans in high places, with MGMT requesting the band join them on tour.

Taking place later this month, the shows will see MGMT tour their controversial second album 'Congratulations'. A deeply psych-indebted affair, Dum Dum Girls are the perfect opener for their confused yet inspiring racket.

Now the West Coast group have confirmed a special one off London show. Taking place on September 28th the band are set to perform in the capital's newly opened music / arts space XOYO.

Launched last month, XOYO mixes art exhibitions with music. Booking a series of hot new acts, the London venue is now set to hold what could well be the last British headline show from Dum Dum Girls this year.

The new date sits in between their duties with MGMT, which finish in London a few days later. Ending with a three night stint at Brixton Academy, the tour ends with a no doubt spectacular show on October 1st.

Meanwhile, former members of Dum Dum Girls have launched a new group. Frank Rose And The Outs contain that familiar blend of 60s pop and all out noise - watch out for a free 'Track Of The Day' download next week.

Dum Dum Girls have confirmed the following shows:

    September
    20 Glasgow Barrowlands
    21 Glasgow Barrowlands
    23 Birmingham O2 Academy
    24 Bournemouth O2 Academy

  • Online John Squire Gallery Launches

    Online John Squire Gallery Launches

A new online gallery devoted to the work of John Squire is set to launch, documenting his art.

John Squire always had a healthy interest in visual art. Working for a time as a designer, the guitarist split his time between art and The Stone Roses. When the Manchester band released their debut album, his fame was assured.

Departing The Stone Roses in 1995, since then John Squire has devoted his time to working on his art. Last year the guitarist squashed re-union rumours with a specially designed sculpture, vowing not to tarnish the memory of the band.

A series of exhibitions last year helped John Squire establish himself as an artist in his own right. Far from the Jackson Pollock inspired designs of his youth, the new works are complex and move across disciplines.

With new exhibitions cropping up frequently, it can be difficult for fans to keep tabs on his career. Now a new website has been launched devoted to documenting John Squire's acclaimed artwork.

In a statement, designer Paul Stevens explained that he wished to bring John Squire's work to a wider audience. "I started this update in July after seeing John's latest pieces (from the Nefertiti series) which recaptured my interests in the artist. I really love a number of the pieces and congratulate John on his ever-evolving style."

The new website contains a number of piece by piece studies. Over 340 original artworks have been added, with additional commentary, information and images showcasing each piece.

Now a full time artist, John Squire's progress has seen him move out of the shadow of The Stone Roses. Now respected in a completely different world, the new site contains "individual piece studies for all John's new artworks 2007-2010 to further support John's move to a full-time, highly acclaimed artist."

  • Klaxons For Radio 1 Tour

    Klaxons For Radio 1 Tour

Returning dance rockers Klaxons are amongst the acts confirmed for Radio 1's new student tour.

Students! Loved and loathed in equal measure, it can't be denied that those hefty loan payments go a long way to propping up a faltering music industry (and, of course, the nation's breweries).

Radio 1 has arranged a new four dates Student tour, designed to coincide with the upcoming Fresher's activities. Matching established talent to unknown newcomers, the tour will move across the country.

Hosted by Fearne Cotton and Zane Lowe, Radio 1's Student tour will be the usual mixture of music and mayhem. Opening in Newcastle on October 18th super producer Mark Ronson will unveil material from his new album.

Working with The Business International, the producer has roped in a series of guest stars. Expect some surprise appearances, with Mark Ronson sure to draw on the full reserve of his back catalogue.

Elsewhere, 30 Seconds To Mars are set to appear at Lincoln on October 19th while mainstream bass duo Chase & Status will tackle the Fresher's at Oxford University. Will the bridge of sighs survive to tell the tale?

The Radio 1 student tour will feature a special DJ set from Zane Lowe each night, with the dates finishing in Bristol. Returning nu rave giants Klaxons are set to appear, fresh from the release of their new album.

Three years in the making, 'Surfing The Void' is a strong return from the controversial trio. Set to headline a show at Bristol University's Anson Rooms Klaxons will be joined by a support slot from Everything Everything.

The Manchester newcomers released their debut album 'Man Alive' earlier this week, a stunning display of pop riddled imagination. Receiving warm reviews, expect a sensational live set.

Radio 1's Student Tour takes in the following shows:

    18 NewcastleNorthumbria University
    19 Lincoln Engine Shed

  • Kode9 To Preview New Burial Album

Kode9 To Preview New Burial Album

Hyperdub boss Kode9 is set to preview Burial's third album with a special set in Italy.

With dubstep entering the mainstream and filthy 'wobble' ruling the airwaves perhaps we all need a reminder of just how thought provoking and emotionally intense bass music can be. New Burial album? SORTED.

It's been three years since the enigmatic London producer dropped new material, choosing to remain in the background. Forced to reveal his identity after being nominated for the Mercury music prize, the producer could still walk un-noticed through the nation's high streets.

Rumours of new projects have surrounded Burial, with reports of a one of DJ Kicks mix as well as a collaboration with Massive Attack. None of these projects have a confirmed release date, and could remain in the planning stages.

However it seems that a new studio album could be in the offing from the reclusive bass producer.

Hyperdub boss Kode9 is set to play a DJ set in Italy where it is rumoured he will play new material from the ghostly garage don. 'Kode9 plays Burial' echoes a similar performance in 2007, when the Scottish DJ previewed 'Untrue'.

Taking place in Italy and Turkey, the Club To Club festival boasts an already stellar bill. Other names confirmed on the line up include Modeselektor, Luke Abbott, Caribou, Jeff Mills and more.

Dubstep is represented by Berlin based producer Shackleton, and an appearance by future garage don Joy Orbison. Elsewhere, Four Tet is set to appear fresh from a residency at Plastic People.

However the tempting promise of new Burial material is by far the biggest attraction of the event. 'New' material from the reclusive producer regularly appears on sites such as YouTube, although there is no guarantee that it has any clear association with Burial.

Club to Club takes place from November 4 to 7 in Torino, and from November 3 to 5 in Istanbul. For more information, visit the festival's homepage HERE.

  • John Lennon Re-Issues Planned

    John Lennon Re-Issues Planned

Solo material recorded by the late Beatle John Lennon is set to gain an expansive re-issue.

Music was John Lennon's life. Just a minutes after helping his wife Yoko Ono to record her now classic disco-noir track 'Walking On Thin Ice' the Beatles icon was shot dead by a deranged fan in New York.

Leaving behind him an incredible artistic legacy, John Lennon's solo years are set to reach a new audience. An under appreciated part of his back catalogue, the songwriter released a total of eight albums under his own name.

Now, with celebrations for what would have been his 70th birthday dawning a new re-issue project has been launched. Available on CD and vinyl, the recordings have been spruced up by sound engineers.

The new re-issue reveals that breadth of Lennon's songwriting, and also his battle with writer's block. Spread across a decade, the recordings move from the classic 'Imagine' to his covers album 'Rock N Roll'.

Sadly ending with 'Double Fantasy' and the posthumous 'Milk And Honey' they demonstrate that John Lennon had once again entered a creative period. The eight albums set to be re-issued are: 'John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band', 'Imagine', 'Some Time In New York City', 'Mind Games', 'Walls And Bridges', 'Rock 'N' Roll', 'Double Fantasy', 'Milk And Honey'.

'Double Fantasy' has been stripped down, with Yoko Ono and Jack Douglas - who worked on the original album - overseeing the new mix.

In addition to this, an eleven disc box set is being planned. 'The John Lennon Signature Box' will include unreleased home recordings, as well as essays from Yoko Ono and the singer's two sons, Sean and Julian Lennon.

As well as this, a four CD box set titled 'Gimme Some Truth' is set to be released. Finally, a one disc 15 song introduction to John Lennon's solo work has been arranged, with 'Power To The People' containing some of his finest moments.

The John Lennon re-issue series begins on October 9th.

  • Four Tet For Oxjam Event

    Four Tet For Oxjam Event

Electronic whizz-kid Four Tet is amongst the acts set to participate in this month's Oxfam event.

One of Britain's most high profile charities, Oxfam are also closely linked to the music scene. Arctic Monkeys released singles through their shops, while the upcoming Oxjam events boast a cracking line up.

Due to take place in September, Oxfam's main London store is set to play host to some very special shows. Electronic artist Four Tet is set to perform, bringing his acclaimed live show to Oxjam.

One of the most acclaimed producers in electronic music, Four Tet's live show mixes left field material with some direct, pulsating techno influences. Now displaying his garage and hip hop influences, the producer has spent the summer playing festivals across Europe.

The month long event will also include Scottish newcomers Pearl & The Puppets, dan le sac vs Scroobius Pip and more. With their new album on the horizon, The Charlatans have agreed to give up their time for Oxfam, arranging a special set.

Joined by The Horrors' Tom Furse, The Charlatans will play Oxfam's main London store on September 27th. Frontman Tim Burgess was clearly delighted to be taking part, saying: "We've been playing shows for 20 years now, but performing in an Oxfam shop has to go down as the most unusual venue we've ever played."

"I've been buying music from Oxfam shops for years, so it's great to be able to take our music onto the shop floor and kick off a whole month of great music with a global impact."

Oxjam isn't just restricted to London, with events taking place across the length and breadth of the UK. Attempting to raise money in order to battle poverty and starvation, the festivals comes to a head across the weekend of October 23rd - 24th.

Dubbed the 'Oxjam Takeover Weekend' a total of 31 mini-festivals will take place across the length of the UK.

  • Cardiff Barfly Closes

    Cardiff Barfly Closes

Welsh music venue Cardiff Barfly has shut its doors, with the building set to remain closed for the foreseeable future.

Live music is under threat across the country. The lingering effects of the recession mean that people have less in their pockets to spend, making audiences less inclined to support new and unknown bands.

Added to this, noise regulations make it difficult for venues to bring their acoustics up to speed. In Wales, Cardiff's The Point was forced to close its doors in 2008 after spending vast amounts on soundproofing.

Combined with the loss of income from shutting its doors, The Point was simply not viable even after the alterations were made.

Now the Welsh capital has suffered another loss. Cardiff Barfly - part of a chain of venues - has been forced to close its doors. The venue shut over the weekend, with a sign on the door confirming its permanent closure.

NME reports that sources close to the Barfly do not expect to see it re-open. Continuing, the source explains that falling attendance levels were to blame for the closure of the city centre venue.

The Cardiff Barfly opened in 2001, located across from Cardiff Castle. In almost a decade the venue has claimed some pivotal acts, including appearances from The Libertines, Interpol, The Killers and Super Furry Animals.

The closure is the latest set back for the Cardiff music scene. However in brighter news, SWN is just around the corner. A multi-venue showcase, the massive festival brings together local and international talent for a series of events.

Together with live performances, SWN will contain a number of industry events where the focus will inevitably fall on the decline of live music.

SWN takes place between October 21st - 23rd.
